DTF vs screen print: which is cheaper for your run?

Both put your art on a shirt. Screen print pushes ink through a stencil, one screen per color, and is cheap per shirt once the screens are paid for. DTF prints the art in full color on a film and we heat-press it on, no screens. Battle Born Clothing does both, so this is the decision rule we actually use.

The cost math

Screen print on a $6.04 PC61 at 48 pieces is $4.34 per location plus $0.25 flash on a dark shirt, and $20 per screen per color. One color on a white shirt: $10.38 each, $518.24 for 48 including the screen. The same art in three colors needs three screens ($60) and a higher per-piece rate quoted for the job. DTF is quoted per job with no setup fee, so at 12 or 24 shirts it usually wins, and with three or more colors it often wins at 48 too. We check both and tell you.

How each one looks and feels

Durability

A properly cured plastisol print lasts the life of the shirt. A DTF transfer pressed at the right settings on a commercial press is durable through normal washing; wash inside out, warm or cold, skip the high-heat dryer. We press in-house on a commercial heat press, not a craft press. Transfers are produced by DTF Tribe in Carson City.

Artwork differences

Screen print wants vector art or a clean high-resolution file with defined colors; fine lines and small text drop out below about 0.25 inch. DTF takes a 300 dpi PNG with a transparent background and prints gradients and photos as-is. If you only have a photo of a logo, DTF is the forgiving choice; for screens we redraw it first.

Timing

Both are 28 days standard from proof approval. DTF has no screen setup and our partner is an hour away, so it is often the faster of the two when a rush is possible. Rush is quoted per job either way.

What we recommend most often

For a company ordering 48 or more crew tees in one or two colors: screen print, every time. For a family reunion, a 20-person team or a bar's first merch run: DTF. For polos and hoodies: embroidery. Send the art and the count and we will tell you which one, with the number.

Questions

Can you mix DTF and screen print in one order?

Yes. A common split is screen-printed crew tees plus a handful of DTF shirts with individual names.

Is DTF the same as DTG?

No. DTG prints directly onto the shirt and needs pretreatment. DTF prints onto film and is heat-pressed. We use DTF, not DTG.

Does DTF work on polyester?

Yes. It presses onto cotton, blends and 100% polyester performance tees like the ST350.
